Gateway Picking Exercises: Intermediate Guitar 2


This is a picking exercise.
The fifth postition of the Emin Pentatonic Scale is as follows:

	12th fret		13th fret
thinnest string	E (root)		G
	B		D
	G	A
	D	E(root)
	A	B
thickest string	E(root)		G


This is how I finger ther fifth position of the Emin pentatonic scale:


	12th fret		15th fret
thinnest string	index		ring
	index		ring
	index	ring
	index	ring
	index	ring
thickest string	index


This exercise will repeatingly descend a portion of the pentatonic scale:


	12th fret		15th fret
thinnest string

3rd string	index	ring
4th string		ring

thickest string


Pay most attention to the repeating downstroke and upstroke pattern.
Play the pattern:
1. 14th fret, ring finger, down stroke, 3rd string
2. 12th fret, index finger, upstroke, 3rd string
3. 14th fret, ring finger, upstroke, 4th string
4. repeat sequence this pattern ad nauseam

If in question this is the order: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, repeat.

Gateway Picking Exercises: Intermediate Guitar 1

Scale: Pentatonic shape in Amin.
1. For intermediates on guitar there are really only 3 keys on guitar, Emin, Emaj, and Amin.
2. Each of the gateway patterns are the same, having 2 notes per string.
3. Penta means 5. Notice on the scale that there are only 5 different letters/notes.
4. "Ton" of "tonic" refers to the origin of the word "tone."
5. Every scale has a root note, though sometimes with a bass play the root is implied.
6. This along with Emin and Emaj are the most common scales in rock or blues.
7. Play patterns using the index finger to the ring finger up the scale.
8. Play patterns using the ring finger to the index finger down the scale.
9. If the scale part seems confusing, then only worry about the the exercises.
